The License-Plate Reader FileIn reporting

Who is reading your plate?
State by state.

Sheriffs and police departments across the country buy automated license-plate readers. Each state map tracks which agencies use them, from which companies, what they pay, and which have pulled back, county by county and with sources.

A tracked state has a county map. Within it, each county is colored by what we have documented, including “Not yet checked”.

New York32224 of 62192Oct. 17, 2026
Texas84135 of 254233Oct. 17, 2026

Each county is counted once, by its most active documented agency. Counties not yet checked are not counted as having no readers.

How these maps are built

In each state we start with the most populous counties: the sheriff’s office, the police department of the largest city, and any city over 100,000 people, then work outward. Each agency’s entry says whether it comes from agency records or from news reports, and links every source. State police and highway patrols are listed in each state’s statewide section.
