The License-Plate Reader File · FloridaIn reporting · updated Oct. 16, 2026

Who is reading your plate?
County by county.

Florida sheriffs and police departments buy automated license-plate readers from Flock Safety, Motorola Solutions, Axon and others. This map tracks which agencies use them, what they pay, and which have pulled back since the state ordered the cameras off state roads.

A county’s color reflects any documented agency in it: the sheriff’s office or a city police department. “Not yet checked” is not the same as “none”.

Using license-plate readers
In use; may have removed cameras on state roads under the FDOT order.
Removing or limiting cameras
Removing cameras beyond state roads, or limiting use, while some remain.
Use suspended
Cameras switched off or use paused; no contract termination reported.
Program documented, current use unconfirmed
Records or reports show the agency bought or used plate readers, but no source found confirms whether they are still in use.
Ended or removed
Contract terminated, program discontinued, or all cameras removed.

Statewide

  1. Aug. 31, 2026 The Florida Department of Transportation revoked permits and ordered all automated license-plate readers off state roads within 30 days. Gov. Ron DeSantis: "I don't want to have this become a surveillance state." (Axios Tampa Bay, Sept. 1, 2026; WUSF, Sept. 2, 2026)
  2. Sept. 30, 2026 The 30-day deadline for removing license-plate readers from state roads passed. (Florida Phoenix, Sept. 30, 2026)
The sheriffs’ association

The camera companies sponsor the national sheriffs’ group led by Pinellas Sheriff Bob Gualtieri.

Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualtieri was sworn in as president of Major County Sheriffs of America (MCSA), an association of the largest sheriff’s offices in the country, on Feb. 5, 2026, for a two-year term. (Pinellas County Sheriff's Office, Feb. 5, 2026)

MCSA lists Flock Safety, Motorola Solutions and Axon, three sellers of license-plate readers, as “sheriff level” sponsors, its top tier. MCSA’s 2026 partnership sheet prices that tier at $150,000. What each company paid has not been reported. (WMNF / Creative Loafing Tampa Bay, Oct. 12, 2026)

Under Gualtieri’s presidency, MCSA promotes license-plate readers through an “ALPR Resources” page and video, and signed a joint letter opposing an amendment that would have barred federal funds to agencies using them. (WMNF / Creative Loafing Tampa Bay, Oct. 12, 2026)

Asked about the sponsorships at an Oct. 8 Pinellas County Commission workshop, Gualtieri said: “I’m not being bought and paid by anybody.” (WMNF / Creative Loafing Tampa Bay, Oct. 12, 2026)

What these records do not show: how much any company paid MCSA, that any payment went to Gualtieri personally, or that sponsorship influenced any decision by his office or the association.

How this map is built

We start with each county’s sheriff’s office and its largest city police departments, then work outward. Each agency’s entry says whether it comes from agency records or from news reports, and links every source. Companies are tracked separately, so the map can show one company’s customers or all license-plate readers together.
