Data centers · For newsrooms

The local record on every data center fight.

478 projects in 27 states, with 1,338 dated updates, 62 recorded votes and approvals, and 345 local moratoriums. Each one is linked to its source.

What changed

Status history

Every project keeps a dated log: filings, hearings, votes, permits, lawsuits, withdrawals. Withdrawn and denied projects stay on the record.

Who decided

Votes and approvals

Who approved or denied a project, on what date, by what vote, linked to their pages on SignalData.

Who said no

Moratoriums and bans

Local pauses and bans, with dates and the record behind each one, plus each state’s data center laws.

Who paid

Money around the projects

In Florida, campaign contributions and lobbying by developers, utilities and contractors. More states are coming.

How each record is checked

A project’s status is the latest public record we have found: a vote, a permit, a filing or a withdrawal. Every update is one dated line in our own words with its source, and we credit the outlet that first reported it. Claims a second, separate check could not confirm are kept off the pages until they are.

Each project is graded by evidence. Today 144 of 478 projects rest on a primary public record; the rest rest on news reports, and their pages say so. The coverage page shows, field by field, how complete the tracker is.

Using it in your reporting

Quote and cite what you read on the site in your reporting: credit SignalData and link to the page you used. Each project page has a ready-made citation. The data files are licensed to subscribers; see the data license.

Follow new records as they land through the updates page or its RSS feed. Each state page lists its local moratoriums and state law.

Newsroom and institutional access

Data plans for newsrooms and institutions include the full data files and, as they open, alerts by state, county or project, API access and single-state subscriptions. Everything on the public site stays free to read. For early access, or to request a state we have not reviewed yet, write to press@signaldata.org.
