Updates, newest first
- Sept. 15, 2026 No lease had been awarded and no developer named, per reporting; Sen. Lisa Murkowski said she does not support data centers at JBER or Interior installations until Alaska's energy supply is more secure. (Alaska Public Media (KUAC, Alaska Desk), Sept. 15, 2026)
- May 29, 2026 Proposals were due. (U.S. Air Force Civil Engineer Center (via GovTribe), April 10, 2026; Anchorage Daily News, May 5, 2026)
- May 5, 2026 Chugach Electric and Golden Valley Electric said they cannot now supply a large data center, citing short gas supplies; the solicitation itself notes a short-term gas shortfall. (Anchorage Daily News, May 5, 2026)
- April 10, 2026 The Department of the Air Force issued Request for Lease Proposals AFCEC-26-R-0006 offering enhanced use leases of up to 50 years for AI data centers at JBER, Eielson and Clear, with developers to finance, permit, build and supply their own power and water. (U.S. Department of the Air Force (Secretary of the Air Force Public Affairs), April 10, 2026; U.S. Air Force Civil Engineer Center (via GovTribe), April 10, 2026; Air & Space Forces Magazine, April 2026)
Conflicts and open questions
- Reporting says a possible Eielson site lies within a military recreation area; Salcha residents raised noise concerns.
- Acreage differs by source: the Air Force release says about 4,700 acres and 12 parcels across the three installations, while the lease solicitation lists five JBER sites, about 4,400 acres in five Eielson sites and about 4,769 acres in four Clear sites.
- No power figure is stated; federal land is outside local zoning (Anchorage's ordinance likely does not apply to JBER, per the Assembly chair).
