No deaths had been reported as of Sunday, Oct. 25, from a shooting near Perry and Manatee streets in Tallahassee the night before, the Tallahassee Police Department said in an update to its news release. Detectives in the department's Violent Crimes Unit worked through the night on digital evidence and leads, and on Sunday morning they were canvassing the area and gathering physical evidence, the department said.1 WCTV reported that police said Sunday morning that five of the injured had been released from the hospital and six remained hospitalized, one of them in critical condition.2
The shooting happened just before 8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 24, near Florida A&M University's Bragg Memorial Stadium during the university's homecoming weekend.13 WCTV reported that FAMU's homecoming game against Arkansas-Pine Bluff had ended at about 6 p.m.2
What police have said about the injured
In its release, current as of 11:30 p.m. Saturday, the department said at least 12 people were hurt. Eleven had gunshot wounds. Six were adults and six were juveniles. At least three had serious injuries, and nine were reported to be in stable condition.1 WCTV reported that the youngest person hurt is 11, that the one person without a gunshot wound was injured while running from the scene, and that Police Chief Lawrence Revell said he believes one of the injured is a FAMU student.2
Revell said in the release that officers carried victims to safety and took them to the hospital before the scene was fully secure, and that it is “especially heartbreaking” that children were among those hurt.1
The investigation
Police said early findings point to a physical altercation before the shots were fired, and that the information is preliminary and may change.1 The release and its Sunday update do not report any arrests or detentions.1 WFSU reported that police said no arrests had been made, and WCTV reported that Revell said there was no person of interest at that point.32 WCTV also reported that Revell said at a news conference shortly after midnight that he believes it was an isolated incident, and that two dozen officers were already in the area when the shooting began.2
“We need our community's help,” Revell said in the Sunday update, asking anyone who saw or heard something, or who recorded video, to come forward.1
University and city response
WTXL reported that FAMU said in an 11 p.m. update Saturday that its campus remained safe and that people were encouraged to avoid the area. The station also reported that Florida State University advised its students, faculty and staff in Tallahassee to stay indoors as a precaution, while saying there was no sign that members of its community were involved.4 WCTV reported that Tallahassee Mayor John Dailey, in a message to the FAMU community, said the shooting was a “truly horrific and heartbreaking tragedy.”2
