The record, newest first

  1. The Gardner Institute data summary listed the center among operating data centers at 54 MW. (Kem C. Gardner Policy Institute, University of Utah, April 2026)

  2. Bluffdale released the center's water billing records after the State Records Committee, on an appeal by the Salt Lake Tribune, ruled them public. (FOX 13, April 25, 2014)

  3. NPR described four data halls totaling 100,000 sq ft, a $1.2 billion cost and 65 MW of power demand; the NSA planned no formal opening. (NPR, Sept. 23, 2013)

  4. KSL reported that the Jordan Valley water conservancy district was planning for 1,000 to 2,000 acre-feet a year for the center at build-out, and that federal money paid for water infrastructure including a system to recycle part of the water. (KSL.com, July 12, 2013)

  5. Data Center Knowledge, citing the Salt Lake Tribune, reported that the first phase was nearing completion after almost four years of construction, with 65 MW of power capacity drawn from Rocky Mountain Power. (Data Center Knowledge, May 20, 2013)

  6. Gov. Gary Herbert signed H.B. 325, which lets MIDA levy an energy tax of up to 6% on delivered energy in its project areas. (Utah State Legislature, March 2013; Data Center Knowledge, May 20, 2013)

Conflicts and open questions

  • Coordinates set at the facility's widely published location at the north end of Camp Williams. The U.S. Census geocoder places that point in Utah County, inside Bluffdale city limits (Bluffdale extends south across the county line). The Gardner summary also lists it as Utah County / Bluffdale. Earlier drafts used Salt Lake County; corrected to Utah.
  • 2013 H.B. 325 (signed April 1, 2013) lets the Military Installation Development Authority levy an energy tax of up to 6% of delivered value in its project areas; the bill text does not name the data center, but Data Center Knowledge reported the tax would apply to the center's Rocky Mountain Power electricity. This is a tax, not an incentive, so it was moved out of the incentives field.
  • The Gardner summary lists 54 MW, lower than the 65 MW reported in 2013.

The full record

Status note
Listed as operational in the 2026 legislative data summary. The NSA never announced a formal opening.
Power note
The Gardner Institute data summary lists 54 MW. NPR and Data Center Knowledge (2013) reported 65 MW. The Gardner figure comes from a third-party compilation (the institute cites company websites, permits, news and commercial listings), not a filing, so mw_basis is 'estimate'.
