PORTS Technology Campus (SB Energy AI data center)
DOE is leasing part of the former Portsmouth uranium enrichment site to an SB Energy affiliate for a 10-gigawatt AI data center campus, which would be powered largely by new gas generation and served by $4.2 billion in AEP Ohio transmission. Also known as: Portsmouth site AI data center.
Who is behind it
The record, newest first
Sinclair's Spotlight on America reported that cleanup and demolition of the old plant continue and that SODI backs the site's reuse. The report gave no data center construction start date. (Spotlight on America (Sinclair, via WCHS), June 19, 2026)
DOE's environmental management office published a special report on the planned campus on leased Portsmouth Site land. (U.S. Department of Energy, Office of Environmental Management, April 7, 2026)
DOE, SoftBank/SB Energy and AEP Ohio announced a 10 GW data center campus on leased land at the Portsmouth Site, with 10 GW of new generation; DOE expects construction jobs over about four years. (U.S. Department of Energy, March 20, 2026; Associated Press (via 13abc), March 20, 2026)
Conflicts and open questions
- Coordinates are approximate: the general location of the former Portsmouth plant south of Piketon, not a parcel.
- The DOE pages give no acreage.
- The Sinclair report attributes a $1.5 trillion figure and plans for 18 SMRs to the project. Neither is in the DOE fact sheet, so they are left out.
The full record
- Status note
- In March 2026 DOE announced a lease of federal land to an SB Energy affiliate. In June 2026 reporting described demolition of the old plant but no data center construction start. The status could reasonably be raised to 'approved' because a federal lease and partnership exist.
- Power note
- DOE fact sheet: 10 GW of data center development, plus 10 GW of new generation, of which at least 9.2 GW is natural gas.
