Who is behind it
The record, newest first
County commissioners approved the special exception at a called meeting; WWALS described the approval as unanimous. (WWALS Watershed Coalition, May 21, 2026)
The Southern Georgia Regional Commission opened comments on the DRI through May 11; its report notes the county zoning code lists data centers as a special-exception use in agricultural, heavy industrial and adult-commercial zones. (Southern Georgia Regional Commission (copy hosted by WWALS Watershed Coalition), April 24, 2026)
The county submitted DRI 4689 for the project to the state. (WWALS Watershed Coalition, April 11, 2026; DatacenterDynamics, April 2026)
Conflicts and open questions
- DRI figures are internally inconsistent: 1,066 acres in the notice vs about 1,205 acres across six parcels; cost written as '$600,000,000 ($6 billion)'; a 30,000 MW daily figure that looks like an error; 18 buildings in the DRI vs five reported by DCD.
- DCD (undated, April 2026) reported Georgia Power was doing an energy study, a first phase possible in 2030 and full build-out by 2034; part of the land was earlier in the withdrawn Irwin Forward Tech Park.
- End user not disclosed; claims of Google are unconfirmed.
- WWALS is an advocacy group; its posts are used for meeting facts and document copies.
