National Transportation Safety Board investigators said Monday, Nov. 2, that work at the Learjet 60 crash site near Greenacres will take several days and that no cause will be determined there. NTSB Member Tom Chapman, at a news conference scheduled for 1 p.m. at the Palm Beach County Emergency Operations Center, said the agency would not settle on a probable cause at the scene, “nor will we speculate about the cause,” UPI reported.123 The agency’s investigation page, ERA27MA026, calls its information preliminary and lists the status as ongoing.4
All nine people aboard died, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said Sunday.5 WFLX reported the NTSB counted two flight crew and seven passengers on the flight from Austin-Bergstrom International Airport to North Eleuthera Airport in the Bahamas.2
What investigators said
As WFLX reported the briefing, the crew told air traffic control at about 12:47 p.m. of light clear ice they considered manageable and moderate turbulence, then asked to climb from 35,000 to 37,000 feet and was cleared. “Less than 30 seconds later, a transmission from the airplane announced the descent, followed by a mayday call,” Chapman said.2
“The weather conditions are a major focus of the investigation,” Chapman said, adding that investigators must still learn what conditions were at altitude.6 The Associated Press quoted him as saying, “We do have some indication that the aircraft was breaking up before impact.”7 AVweb quoted him this way: “We do have some evidence that there was some breakup of the aircraft before impact. We’re still seeking to determine that.”8
Investigators put the debris field at roughly half a mile by four-tenths of a mile, AVweb reported,8 and Investigator-in-charge Timothy Monville said pieces lie among ball fields, businesses and homes, UPI reported.1 He also said a person in a vehicle leaving the area had a leg injury;2 at a Sunday news conference, officials knew of no deaths or injuries on the ground.9
Residents, road and school
The AP reported Sunday that county authorities were evacuating about 600 people from a mobile home community nearby;5 WPTV reported that county officials expected to move that many and had two shelters on standby.9 County Commissioner Joel G. Flores said Monday that residents of about 77 mobile homes went to a shelter and the county did not know when they could return, the AP reported.7
The county’s Nov. 1 notice closes Military Trail between 10th Avenue North and Purdy Lane/Alemeda Drive “until further notice” and gives no duration.10 CBS12 reported the sheriff’s office described a closure from Cresthaven Boulevard to 10th Avenue North lasting weeks.11
John I. Leonard High School closed Monday, and all district-operated schools are closed Tuesday, Nov. 3, for Election Day, the School District of Palm Beach County said, according to CBS12 and WPTV.1213
Election Day
No record SignalData could open says the crash changes voting. The Palm Beach County supervisor of elections’ homepage and 2026 General Election page, checked Monday afternoon, do not mention the crash; the election page lists polls open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday and points voters to its My Status page to find their assigned polling place.1415 The homepage also lists an undated “2026 General Election - Polling Place Change Notice” whose text SignalData could not open.14
What the records do not show
- Why the jet crashed. The NTSB has stated no cause.
- Whether the cockpit voice recorder that maintenance records show was installed was still aboard, Chapman said.8
- One settled time and place: the FAA said about 12:50 p.m. near Cresthaven;16 WFLX gave about 12:51 p.m.;2 the NTSB page lists Lake Worth Beach;4 the AP cited sheriff’s officials for Greenacres.5
- How many people are in shelters now.
- Whether any polling place is inside the closure or moved because of the crash.
- The FAA and school district statements as issued; they were read only through news reports.
