A child in Lewis County has died in what state and county health officials called the first known measles-associated death in New York in more than 30 years, according to a joint statement released Monday, Nov. 2, by the New York State Department of Health and Lewis County Public Health. The statement does not give the child's age or vaccination status and asks that the family's privacy be respected.1 Lewis County Public Health issued its own statement Tuesday, Nov. 3, repeating that request and giving no case count.2
A county notice posted Sept. 26 described one confirmed case; another, posted Oct. 2, reported 10 more.34 The county health department's page lists 15 confirmed cases as of Oct. 14.5
The state's count and emergency order
New York had 178 measles cases this year as of Oct. 24, according to the joint statement: 170 outside New York City and eight in the city.1 The governor's office gave 108 as of Oct. 3 when Gov. Kathy Hochul declared a state disaster emergency on Oct. 5 through Executive Order No. 65. The order adds paramedics, advanced EMS providers, pharmacists and midwives to those who can give measles vaccines and lets nurses order testing.6 The order runs until Nov. 4.7
The joint statement says the department is working with county health departments to offer the MMR vaccine to unvaccinated people who ask for it and to investigate reported cases, including through contact tracing.1
What officials said
Hochul said Nov. 2 that she was “heartbroken” and called the death “a devastating reminder of what's at stake when Washington deliberately erodes decades of progress in protecting Americans from preventable illnesses.”8
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said, “Our hearts go out to the family mourning this tragic loss,” and that its director, Dr. Erica Schwartz, and Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. “continue to make clear that the MMR vaccine is the most effective way to prevent measles,” The Hill reported.9
The national count
The CDC's measles page reports 4,852 confirmed U.S. cases in 2026 as of Oct. 29: 4,834 across 47 jurisdictions and 18 among international visitors. It lists 43 new outbreaks this year and three confirmed deaths, a number it says is subject to change. The page was last updated Oct. 30, before New York's announcement.10
Pennsylvania's count
The Pennsylvania Department of Health's Nov. 2 update lists 1,433 confirmed cases in 44 counties this year, 269 hospitalizations and “Total Confirmed Measles-Associated Deaths: 5.”11 That update does not mention a sixth death. NBC10 Philadelphia reported Oct. 12 that officials had recorded a sixth, in Franklin County, and that a coroner's office spokesperson gave the primary cause as “a probable acute cardiac event due to possible complications of the measles.”12 The department said Oct. 16 that it had confirmed five and “continues investigating a recently reported death in Franklin County.”13 The Associated Press reported Nov. 2 that the state had five deaths and was investigating a possible sixth; United Press International reported the same day that the state health department had reported six.1415
What the records do not show
- The official statements we opened do not give the child's age, date or cause of death, or vaccination status, and do not name the child or family. This report adds no such details from other sources.182
- We found no county total newer than Oct. 14 and no record extending the emergency order past Nov. 4.
- We could not read the figures in New York's or Pennsylvania's dashboards, so we could not check New York's count after Oct. 24 or Pennsylvania's death count there.
- We found no Pennsylvania Department of Health record counting a sixth death or giving the outcome of its Franklin County review. UPI linked its figure to an earlier UPI article.
- The CDC page does not say which deaths its three include.10
