FSU fires Mike Norvell; reports put buyout at $46 million to $50 million
News outlets give different figures for the former Florida State football coach’s buyout. No record SignalData could open gives the university’s own number.
SignalData ·
Florida State University, a public university, fired head football coach Mike Norvell on Sunday, Nov. 1. News reports put his buyout between about $46 million and roughly $50 million.12 No record SignalData could open gives the university’s own figure.
President Richard McCullough said in a statement, “We have made the decision to change the leadership of our football program,” WCTV reported. Rick Stockstill is interim coach.1
What outlets report
Figures are as each outlet reported them and are not added together.
- The AP: “roughly $50 million” in its opening and, further down, “approximately $47 million,” 85% of remaining salary through the 2031 season. It said buying out assistants would push the buyout “far past $50 million.”3
- WCTV: just over $46 million, 85% of the remaining contract.1
- CBS Sports: $46 million in one story;4 in another, an estimate of “just under $49 million,” and “just over $48.6 million,” described as 85% of remaining salary plus $3 million and $750,000.5
- Sports Illustrated’s FSU site: “north of $46 million.” Separately, it reported Norvell is due back $3.75 million of his $4.5 million contribution.6
- Front Office Sports: “roughly $50 million,” linking to a post by Pete Thamel.2
The contract
FSU said Dec. 16, 2024, that Norvell agreed to a restructured contract, through 2031, with a $4.5 million contribution to its Vision of Excellence fundraising campaign.7
Tomahawk Nation, citing a copy it received through a public records request, reported that a firing without cause costs 85% of remaining compensation plus a prorated sum listed at $3.75 million for 2026.8 Sports Illustrated’s site reported payment by monthly installments or lump sum, reduced by Norvell’s guaranteed salary at a new job.6
What reports say about payment
WCTV and the AP reported that the cost falls on the school.13 Front Office Sports reported that McCullough indicated the finances had been considered, quoting him on “all contingencies and financial aspects” and adding, “Obviously we’ll have to figure all of that out.”2 CBS Sports described the buyout as a “considerable financial commitment from Florida State’s boosters” without giving details.5
State pay limit
State law caps a university employee’s remuneration at $250,000 a year from public funds, defined as general revenue, state trust fund appropriations, or tuition and fees. Some faculty are exempt. Other parties may pay more, but public funds may not cover an obligation they fail to meet. The law defines remuneration as pay “for work performed” and does not mention buyouts.9 No record SignalData opened applies this law to Norvell’s contract or says any payment has exceeded the limit.
Earlier audits
Two audits cover earlier fiscal years. Neither mentions Norvell, this buyout or the state pay limit.
For the fiscal year ended June 30, 2024, the FSU Athletics Association’s audit describes termination benefits for coaches the university let go in recent years: compensation remaining after a 20-week period, reduced by new pay. Its narrative says $2.4 million from the athletic department that year was received primarily to pay down those benefits; its statements list $1,972,651 in department contributions. It says all of those benefits had been paid by June 30, 2024.10
For the fiscal year ended June 30, 2025, Seminole Boosters’ audit calls the group “the official legal conduit” for private gifts and lists $36,562,008 in support to the athletic department.11
What the records do not show
- Seminoles.com refused SignalData’s request for FSU’s Nov. 1 announcement. The statement’s wording above comes from WCTV.
- SignalData did not open Norvell’s contract or amendments and found no published copy. Contract terms above are as reported.
- No opened record gives FSU’s own figure, its payment choice, or who funds it: state appropriations, tuition or private gifts.
- None says whether the Athletics Association or the university holds this contract, or how much any offset would reduce the cost.
