Seven state legislative chambers had changed party control, all to Democrats, as of 4:14 p.m. ET Wednesday, Nov. 4, Ballotpedia reported, with 14 of the 88 chambers on the ballot still uncalled. Ballotpedia credited its calls to The New York Times, The Associated Press and State Navigate.1 All results remain unofficial.

Each party had won 37 chambers on the ballot, by Ballotpedia's count. Across all 99 chambers it showed 42 Democratic, 43 Republican and 14 uncalled, compared with 39 Democratic, 57 Republican and three under coalitions or a tie before the election.1

Chambers reported changing

The counts differ by source. Ballotpedia lists seven.1 The Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee's tracker, last updated at 2:15 p.m. ET Wednesday, shows 12 majorities flipped.2 By source:

  • Flipped, per Ballotpedia and the DLCC: Michigan House; Minnesota House, from a tie; North Carolina House; Pennsylvania Senate; Texas House; Wisconsin Assembly and Senate.12
  • Flipped, per the DLCC; no call listed by Ballotpedia: Arizona House and Senate; Georgia House; New Hampshire House and Senate.231

Fox 5 Atlanta reported Wednesday morning that unofficial tallies gave Georgia House Democrats 93 of 180 seats and Republicans 86, with one race likely headed to a runoff, and said “the results have not been certified.”4 Stateline reported that unofficial results show Democrats will control the Arizona Legislature.5

Ballotpedia states the count of 14 but does not name those chambers on its results page. The names here are our own count: comparing its 74 published calls with the 88 chambers on the ballot leaves Alaska House and Senate; Arizona House and Senate; Georgia House; Nebraska Legislature; New Hampshire House and Senate; North Carolina Senate; Oregon House and Senate; Utah House; and Washington House and Senate.1

Trifectas as reported

Stateline, citing the National Conference of State Legislatures, reported that Democrats were on course for new trifectas, one party holding the governorship and both chambers, in Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. It also reported that Republican trifectas ended in Georgia, Iowa, Ohio and Texas.5 The DLCC also claims a new Democratic trifecta in Arizona, which is not on that list.3

What each party's committee says

“Last night remade the political map,” DLCC President Heather Williams said in a statement, adding that “we have put Democrats in a stronger position all across the map.”6 The committee separately cited outstanding results, special elections in Texas and “likely recounts” in Minnesota, New Hampshire and North Carolina.3

Edith Jorge-Tuñón, president of the Republican State Leadership Committee, cited a “historically difficult political environment” and said Republicans “must confront the challenges ahead and make a sustained commitment to winning back and defending our majorities.” Her statement names no chambers.7

What the records do not show

  • We opened no state election office's results, and nothing here is certified. These counts come from a tracker, a party committee and news reports, and they conflict.
  • We could not open the National Conference of State Legislatures' report on the results. Its trifecta list appears here only as Stateline reported it.5
  • We have no seat totals for any chamber except Fox 5's Georgia House figures, last updated at 6:41 a.m. Wednesday and not checked against the state.4
  • The DLCC's figures, including 475 seats flipped and 530 races outstanding, are a party committee's own and unconfirmed. It showed no call for some chambers Ballotpedia had called, such as both in California.21
  • Ballotpedia's post-election trifecta map did not load as text.1
