Amazon Web Services data centers, Haymarket
Amazon's Haymarket campus off Route 55 drove a long fight over a new Dominion 230 kV line and substation, which ended in 2018 when Dominion agreed to bury three miles of the line.
Who is behind it
The record, newest first
Dominion agreed to bury about three miles of the line along Interstate 66 near Haymarket, and community groups dropped their challenges before the SCC. By then one retrofitted building was an Amazon data center and a second had recently been built next to it. (Data Center Frontier, April 2, 2018)
The State Corporation Commission approved Dominion's Haymarket 230 kV line and substation, favoring a route along the Norfolk Southern rail line. (Daily Energy Insider, April 12, 2017)
Plans for a data center of nearly 500,000 sq ft on land owned by Midwood LLC, which documents cited by the Prince William Times linked to Amazon affiliate Vadata, needed a new Dominion 230 kV line and substation estimated at $65 million. (WTOP, Dec. 2014)
Conflicts and open questions
- Also covered in general terms by aws-northern-virginia; this entry is the separately documented Haymarket campus.
- In 2014 the developer had not been named; WTOP reported ties to Amazon affiliate Vadata. Data Center Frontier (2018) names AWS as the end user.
