Google Arcola campus
Google's data center on about 91 acres in the middle of the Arcola Center development along Route 50, bought in 2017 through Wheeler Survey Company LLC and approved by supervisors in 2018 for up to 2.35 million sq ft. Also known as: Wheeler Survey Company LLC data center.
Who is behind it
The record, newest first
Google said it operates two Loudoun County data centers that opened within the previous five years. (Google, March 21, 2024)
Virginia DEQ issued a permit for 106 diesel generator sets at the site (registration 74152), superseding a permit dated December 2021. (Virginia Department of Environmental Quality, Jan. 30, 2024)
Loudoun Now reported that supervisors, on a 6-0-2-1 vote, approved a revision to Arcola Center allowing up to 2.35 million sq ft of data centers, with road, school and capital-facility proffers valued at $25.3 million. (Loudoun Now, May 24, 2018)
Wheeler Survey Company LLC bought two tracts totaling 91 acres in Arcola Center; Google confirmed the purchase in late November 2017. (Loudoun Now, Nov. 29, 2017; Data Center Frontier, Nov. 30, 2017)
Conflicts and open questions
- Land price differs between sources: Loudoun Now reported $39 million and Data Center Frontier $58 million for the 91 acres.
- Google's 2024 post does not name its two Loudoun sites; matching them to the Leesburg and Arcola parcels is an inference.
- The DEQ permit gives a Sterling mailing address (24400 Howling Rooster Lane); the 2017 report places the land north of Route 50, south of Evergreen Mills Road and west of Route 606.
- Previously covered only by the broad google-northern-virginia entry.
