Melania Trump hosts Russian and Ukrainian officials at White House after six-day Oleshky truce
The White House says written agreements made her “Exclusive Intermediary” and that nearly 800 people were evacuated. Neither government has released a count. Ukraine’s General Staff and its ombudsman describe the truce differently.

First lady Melania Trump hosted Russian and Ukrainian officials at the White House on Thursday, Nov. 5, according to a White House release. It named Kirill Dmitriev, special envoy to Russian President Vladimir Putin; Yana Lantratova, Russia’s human rights commissioner; Davyd Arakhamia, who leads the Servant of the People faction in Ukraine’s parliament; and Dmytro Lubinets, Ukraine’s parliamentary human rights commissioner.12 The AP reported that President Donald Trump did not take part.2
In remarks the White House published as prepared for delivery, she asked both sides to build on a local truce in Oleshky, in Ukraine’s Kherson region, that ended Nov. 1. “Let Oleshky be the modest spark that grows into a lasting flame of peace,” she said.12
The release said Ukrainian representatives gave her the Order of Princess Olga, First Class, and that she gave letters for Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to the senior officials present.1
The role the White House describes
The White House’s Oct. 23 release said she acted “in her formal role as Exclusive Intermediary.”3 In Thursday’s remarks she said the role “was memorialized in written agreements drafted and signed by both Russia and Ukraine,” signed Oct. 23, and that she “was involved in every stage of the planning.”1 The Nov. 3 release announcing the event said she “independently initiated engagement” with the two countries.4 A Reuters report described the truce as arranged through her “with the involvement of Pope Leo.”5
The dates
The Oct. 23 release said: “The localized ceasefire will begin on October 29, 2026.” It gave no end date.3 Meduza reported that day that Gen. Valery Gerasimov, chief of the Russian General Staff, said Russian forces would stop firing on the Kherson front from Oct. 27.6 The AP reports six days, Oct. 27 to Nov. 1.2 An unnamed Ukrainian official told AFP that Russia reportedly rejected Kyiv’s proposal to extend it, Al Jazeera reported.7
The evacuation
The Nov. 5 release credited her with organizing the evacuation of “nearly 800 people” and elsewhere said “800 individuals.”1 The AP reported that Ukrainian authorities have not said how many left.2 Lubinets said the two sides could not officially disclose numbers “under the terms of the prior agreement,” the Kyiv Independent reported.8 Lantratova said a count was not possible, Vedomosti reported.9 The White House estimated in October that 1,700 to 2,000 residents remained, about 50 of them children, out of roughly 24,000 before the war.3
Whether the truce held
- Ukraine’s General Staff, Nov. 2: “The enemy, by contrast, used the humanitarian pause to improve its positions.”10
- Dmitry Peskov, Kremlin spokesman, responding, assumed Ukrainian forces had also regrouped: “This is standard practice in such situations. But I’m not familiar with the specifics.”10
- Lubinets, Nov. 2: both sides “upheld the obligations they undertook.”10
- Lantratova, Nov. 2, translated from Russian: there were “no incidents or violations of the silence regime.”11
- Rodion Miroshnik, a Russian Foreign Ministry envoy, earlier accused Ukrainian forces of violating the truce, saying a drone hit a civilian car leaving Oleshky and injured two people, Echo reported.12
Further truces
- Peskov, Nov. 2, asked about continuing the practice: “There are no similar plans at this time, nor are there any similar initiatives.”13
- Zelenskyy, to Fox News, Nov. 2: “If the first lady can do it, can continue, it’s very helpful.”13
- Lantratova, Nov. 2: the two ombudsmen asked for regular monthly aid missions to Oleshky, Vedomosti reported.9
What the records do not show
- The agreements’ text is not in the records we opened.
- We found no Russian or Ukrainian government count of evacuees and no breakdown by destination.
- We found no independent finding on whether either side broke the truce.
- The records we opened do not explain the difference between the Oct. 27 and Oct. 29 start dates.
