President Donald Trump said Friday, Nov. 6, 2026, that Stephen Miller will replace Susie Wiles as White House chief of staff, NPR and CNN reported. Trump made the announcement in a post on Truth Social, NPR said, and the change takes effect Monday, Nov. 9, according to both outlets.12

Wiles confirmed her departure in a post on X on Friday. “Today is my last day as White House Chief of Staff,” she wrote, calling her service to Trump “the honor of a lifetime.”3 She added, according to NPR and CNN, “While my role may be changing, my commitment to the President and the mission never will.”12

What Trump said

In the Truth Social post, Trump said Wiles would keep working for him on his political operation, NPR reported. CNN reported that Trump said she “has done an outstanding job.”12

Speaking to reporters as he left the White House for an event in Florida, Trump said, “Stephen’s been great, and sometimes in life, you gotta make moves,” CNN reported. NPR quoted him as saying, “He gets it.”21

CNN reported that Miller wrote on X that he was “honored beyond words” to take the job and thanked Wiles.2

Who they are

A White House web page published May 1, 2025, identifies Miller as deputy chief of staff for policy and homeland security adviser.4 CNN reported that Miller has been on Trump’s staff since the 2015 start of Trump’s first run for president.2

Wiles managed Trump’s 2024 campaign, CNN reported, and she is the first woman to hold the chief of staff post, according to CNN and NPR. She had held the post since the start of Trump’s second term, according to NPR. On Oct. 16, Trump said, “Susie is here and she’s gonna be here for a long time,” CNN reported.21

The reports SignalData reviewed did not describe any other staff changes announced with this one.12

The midterm results

The announcement came three days after the Nov. 3 midterm election, in which voters gave Democrats control of both the House and the Senate, The Associated Press reported.5

CNN, citing people familiar with the matter, reported that Trump had blamed his political team, including Wiles, for Republican losses, and that Wiles submitted her resignation Thursday evening. A person familiar with her thinking told CNN that she decided to step aside once it was clear Trump was unhappy with her. In the statements SignalData reviewed, neither Trump nor Wiles gave a reason for her departure.23

Reaction

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, a New York Democrat, wrote on X that Miller is “a dangerous xenophobe and reckless extremist” and added, “Fire him today.”6

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, a New York Democrat, wrote on X, “Trump couldn’t have made a worse choice,” and said Democratic majorities would oppose Miller.7

Rep. Robert Garcia of California, the top Democrat on the House Oversight Committee, said, “Stephen Miller should lawyer up,” CNN reported.2

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth welcomed the choice on X, writing that Miller “never backs down,” according to CNN.2
